Chapter One

So, it was to the death then! Patrick Kelly smiled grimly. He held his sword upright, in salute to his assailant, spread his feet for a better stance, and then, without warning, hacked down at his opponent’s neck. Sweat trickled from his forehead and stung his eyes, blinding him. He knew he’d missed his target when the scything momentum of the heavy blade almost spun him around. He staggered backwards, away from the blurred outline of his attacker and wiped the back of his left hand across his face, holding the heavy blade single-handedly for one dangerous moment, before grasping the slippery hilt of the weapon once again.
